The story sets in the late 1950s. Ingemar is a boy who lives with his older brother and his ill mother. He loves dogs and is particularly worried about Laika, the Russian dog sent to space. The boy doesn't get along well with his brother, who spends time playing practical jokes. As their mother's health deteriorates Ingemar feels left alone with his feelings and thoughts. Meanwhile the mother cannot get on taking care of the quarrelling boys. One day, Ingemar and his brother are separated for the sake of their ill mother. Ingemar is sent to his loveable aunt and uncle, who live in a small town. There, Ingemar meets sympathic people. For the first time, the boy is surrounded by relatives and classmates who pose no threat and who genuinely like him.

The film by Lasse Hallström was nominated for two Oscars in 1988.
