"When I first came across Linnaeus' writings, I was amazed at their being so outspoken and poetic – not at all what I expected of a scientist. They are shot through with a love of plants.For the enlightenment of his contemporaries, he employed imagery in presenting his scientific discoveries. His parallels between botanical and human sexuality were an educational device but also describe the similarity between our reproductive mechanisms.

Inspired by Linnaeus' unabashed writings, a few years ago I began collecting plant photographs. These have since grown into a photographic herbarium. Linnaeus' curiosity and enthusiasm are catching. I have tried to emulate his approach to the plant kingdom. I wanted to present Linnaeus' insights concerning the sexuality of plants in a contemporary way." Edvard Koinberg

CARL LINNAEUS (1707-1778), also known as Carl von Linné, is the most famous Swedish naturalist. His aim was to name and classify all living things. In Sweden he is seen as a traveller and explorer of his own country, elsewhere he is known for laying the foundations of a modern classification system of flora and fauna. But he was also an inspiring teacher, who sent his students on voyages of scientific discovery all over the world.
