During the last 2 or 3 years, small architectural projects along
Norwegain roads - already much noted in the architectural community -
have drawn the attention of a larger audience in Norway and in other
countries. These viewpoints, rest stops, service points and other
stopping places along the way are characterised by an innovative concept
and outstanding execution. Hence, experiencing the scenic beauty of
Norway takes on quite another qualitative dimension.
The
different projects were designed by Norwegian and foreign architects,
lanscape architects and designers. Considerable funds were spent on the
development of innovative solutions and a high-quality construction -
from the ground-breaking to the ribbon-cutting ceremony.Several of the
projects have been highly acclaimed in the international architecture
community.
The exhibition DETOUR (in Norwegian Omveg) was
jointly conceived by the Scenic Roads Project of Statens Vegvesen
(Norwegian Road Maintenance Administration) and the foundation Norsk
Form. When the exibition was shown in Oslo in October and November 2006,
the public was enthusiastic about how they could enter into another
world, a world created by the artist Barbro Westling and Peter
Johansson. For the travelling exhibition Westling and Johansson make
refrence to early tourism and its preference of the "mystical
Masterview". Visitors to the exhibition can look through the openings of
a peep box, encased in brass just like in 1900, and can view the
Norwegian landscape, the outing with the motorcar, and modern design and
architecture.
