As diverse as the Nordic islands are, so too are the types of artistic
craftwork that come from these regions. A very wide spectrum of
materials – from wood, glass and fabrics to ceramics and metal – are
worked into a great number of different styles, from baroque to
minimalist.
With all this variation, it is astonishing to find
such close links among artists and craftspeople from the Nordic islands.
Joint exhibitions allow for mutual inspiration, while demonstrating
cultural relatedness.
The Island Design exhibition opens a window
onto this artistic milieu, with Faroese textile designer Astrid
Andreasen’s work exploring the high birth rate on the Faroe Islands,
with the delicate aerial objects of Gotland native Johan Hallin, and
with the wafer-thin wooden lampshades of former Bornholm artist Ole
Jacob Nielsen.
