The exhibition shows works of art that were created in the very recent
past, thus offering insight into artistic creativity in a time that was
very extraordinary for Iceland. This period was characterised by an
unrivalled rollercoaster ride of the economy soaring skyward, only to be
followed by a bitter crash. This development has influenced all areas
of Icelandic society – and, last not least, art. How did the artists
react?
Each work of art tells part of the story, depending on when it
was created – during the boom, the crisis or the aftermath. In some
cases the artists reacted directly to the situation, in other cases the
reference is more subtle. The artistic creativity of recent years must
inevitably be viewed in the light of the exceptional circumstances in
Iceland.
The exhibition reveals the tendency for criticism, discussion and
diagnosis, but also shows the reactions which consider the development
in Iceland to be a purely coincidental symptom of society.
