Nordic and International »Art as Criticism«What
possibilities exist for expressing open criticism in today's society?
How can art escape the pressure of consensus thinking common in the
Nordic countries and succeed in making its alternate perspectives heard?
Taking
into consideration »political correctness« in the Scandinavian context
and the ongoing German debate on this topic, this project investigates
how criticism can be expressed in art. The starting point is the
philosophical action theory of Hannah Arendt in which she describes the
relationship between the acting subject (agent) and the situation
(action) and intertwines her unique feminist language with social
critique.
In their art, Nordic and international artists such as
Annika Eriksson,
Daniel Knorr,
Florian Zeyfang,
Slavs & Tatars,
Markus Degerman,
CANAN and
Olof Dreijer subtly and humorously explore the forms, ideas and current positions of art as criticism.
The main exhibition venue is the
Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies. Parallel to this, a selection of the works is also on view in
Café Nest in Kreuzberg. A supporting program (see below) complements the exhibitions.
The
design of the architecture of the exhibition in the Felleshus and its
interconnectedness with the city has been implemented by the Stockholm
artist Markus Degerman, a member of the art collective uglycute.
