Exhibition in the Felleshus

Exhibition: Flagships of Culture. New Nordic Architecture«

07.07.11- 07.09.11

With extensive cultural festival and seminars for specialists

The dream of many city fathers is the Bilbao effect – an architectural masterpiece that attracts tourists and is known nationally and internationally as icon of the city. In the five Nordic countries – Denmark (with Greenland), Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden outstanding cultural buildings are currently being planned or have recently been constructed. Two buildings (in Copenhagen and Oslo) were already opened in 2008, in Reykjavík and Helsinki openings are planned for August, Malmö is planning an opening in 2013/14, and in Nuuk the winner of the architecture competition was announced last February.

The joint exhibition of the Nordic Embassies not only shows the architectural visions behind these projects and their implementation, but also highlights the role of these buildings in society and in the urban landscape. Key thematic aspects include sustainability and energy efficiency, lighting, art and design, materials, technology and acoustics and urban planning.

On Sunday, 4 September from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm the Nordic Embassies will conclude the exhibition with a cultural festival in Rauchstraße 1. Musicians from the Nordic countries will take turns at the microphone on an outdoor stage in the courtyard of the embassy grounds, the Felleshus will be open to the public, and of course there will be a family-friendly cultural program, a prize competition, booths with information on the Nordic countries, sales booths and Nordic food.

Specialist seminars with experts in the field will take place on 5 and 6 September to discuss the importance of architecturally outstanding single buildings for urban development. Various topics will be discussed from different perspectives, including the public reaction to the new buildings and the artistic content that brings the buildings to life. You can download the seminar programm here.
